Our History


Humble Beginnings

Like many others in 1961, George Feldenkreis left Cuba in a hurry, taking only his family and a meager $700. Faced with the immediate need to earn a living, Mr. Feldenkreis started representing and distributing motorcycle, automotive and electronic parts and supplies in Miami. Within two years he started traveling to the Far East and was actively importing everything from auto parts to cloth and buttons, thus founding his first company, Carfel.


Supreme International is Born

George and his brother Isaac create Supreme International, manufacturing two products: school uniforms and traditional Latin 4-pocket linen shirts. Earns the title: “King of Guayaberas.”


International Expansion

Supreme expands internationally with offices in Osaka, Seoul and Taipei, enabling immediate response to fashion trends. Becomes one of the industry’s strongest sourcing companies.


Like Father, Like Son

Oscar Feldenkreis joins the company. His keen fashion sense and design direction transitions the company from a distributor of private label merchandise to a manufacturer of branded sportswear.


First Major Brand

The company launches its first major brand, Natural Issue®, specializing in the process of reactive printing.


Domestic Expansions

A showroom is opened in Manhattan's garment district, one of the world's most influential fashion capitals.


Beginnings of a Public Company

Initial public offering, trading on the NASDAQ as SUPI.


"Best Small Company"

Forbes Magazine recognized the company as the 34th “Best Small Company” and JC Penney also presented it with the “Minority Employer of the Year” award.


Beginnings of Brand Expansion

Acquisition of Munsingwear® and Grand Slam® brands adds 110 years of history and product innovation to the company’s heritage.


30 Years in Business

Celebrating 30 years in business, the company expanded to new corporate headquarters. Both Individual Investor Magazine and Forbes Magazine recognized the company as one of the best and fastest growing in the U.S. The company also acquired the knitwear brand Crossings®, transforming from knits and wovens to an all-category sportswear supplier.


Golf as a Lifestyle

The company embarked on branded golf apparel, which would grow into one of the company’s largest and most successful apparel lifestyles The collection is synonymous with luxury and technology.


A Year of Transformation

Perry Ellis®, Manhattan® and John Henry® are added to the brand portfolio. Company changes name to Perry Ellis International, Inc. NASDAQ symbol becomes PERY.


In-House Inspiration

The company launched two Latin-inspired brands with Cubavera® and the Havana Shirt Company®, both created in-house. The company also acquired the Pro Player® brand, which represents an active sportswear lifestyle.


Empowering Corporate Apparel

Enters into the corporate apparel business, providing high-quality performance products and uniforms to a variety of companies.


The Year of Swimwear

Acquires the iconic Jantzen® swimwear brand and licensing rights to Nike® Swim, representing a new landmark in manufacturing competencies. Original Penguin® by Munsingwear® line is introduced, offering savvy millennials a new line of sportswear.


An Important Merger is Made

Salant Corporation, the largest licensee of the Perry Ellis brand is acquired. The merger creates one of the largest men’s sportswear companies in America.


The Year of Golf

Securing licensing agreement for PGA TOUR® adds golf apparel business to the company portfolio. Golf becomes a cornerstone in PEI’s strategic focus.


Enhancing Lifestyle Portfolio

Tropical Sportswear International assets, Savane® and Farah® trademarks, added to portfolio of lifestyle brands. With offices in London, the company looks towards further European expansion.


Surf Lifestyle Expansion

Perry Ellis International expanded its surf brand portfolio by acquiring the trademarks to the internationally recognized surfwear brands Gotcha®, GirlStar® and MCD®, which are distributed across five continents. In 2006, the company was ranked as the number one apparel company in stock performance by the trade magazine Daily News Record, as well as signing a licensing agreement for Jag® swimwear.


40 Years in Business

The company celebrates its 40th anniversary in business. PEI was positioned to respond to the ever-changing retail climate, had a positive outlook on the future, and continued to build strong brands. These assets propelled the company to new heights in consumer recognition, revenues and profits.


Market Growth

Enters the women’s contemporary market by adding iconic Laundry by Shelli Segal® and C&C California® brands to the portfolio.


Major Step for Cubavera®

Opens first Cubavera® store in Miami International Airport, the gateway to Latin America.


Callaway® Joins the Family

Perry Ellis International became the licensee for Callaway® golf apparel in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Adding to the extensive line-up of accolades, the Perry Ellis® brand can now be found in more than 50 countries with 12 international freestanding stores and 39 outlet stores across the U.S. To date, Original Penguin by Munsingwear® hosts 7 retail and 3 outlet stores in the U.S. and can be found in 16 international retail doors.


"The Perfect Fitting Pant"

Rafaella® brand acquisition expands reach and leverage across multiple apparel classifications for women, building on reputation for women’s career sportswear and the “Perfect Fitting Pant.”


Another Step in Golf Apparel

Acquisition of Ben Hogan® golf apparel and expansion of licensing agreements with Callaway Golf to include Latin America and Canada and PGA TOUR® to include Mexico and Canada.


20 Years in NASDAQ

PERY celebrates 20-year anniversary trading on NASDAQ with George and Oscar participating in closing bell ceremony. New York o›ces move to the iconic Hippodrome building in Midtown Manhattan, centralizing men’s design and sales teams under one roof.


Legends of Golf

Secures Jack Nicklaus® licensing agreement to distribute men’s and ladies sportswear, tailored clothing and accessories for one of golf’s greatest names and global brands.
